Genuinely good sales people

I was wondering if there is something like good sales people and lucky sales people, and came to a conclusion that there surely is such a breed. The lucky ones are not as good as the ‘good sales’ people but they do follow some guidelines.

Good sales people are the ones who are extremely good relationship managers. These are the ones who treat each relationship in a different way and have a way with people. They are the ones who try to understand the problems of their clients and build the relationship to such a level that the client is ready to share the internal and sometimes personal details with them. They become their confides. Trust and rapport are the main ingredients.

So how does one build this kind of a relationship? Can a good person become a good sales person? ‘Genuine’ relationship managers don’t fake their relationship just to get a deal. They are the ones who try to understand the problems, listen to their clients and then try to bridge the gap between the needs and company’s products/ services. This person is there to solve the problem and not there to get the deal. Well I may be ‘out casted’ from any sales organization for saying so, but being in sales myself I can say that a genuine sales person’s first motive should be to solve the problem, if you are able to solve the problem the deal will come to you. A genuine sales person will always be ready to solve the problem and he knows the tricks to get the solution.

A ‘genuine’ relationship manager is at his best behavior with everyone most of the time, there will be times when each person loses his mind, thus I wrote most of the times rather than ‘all’ times. You won’t hear a ‘genuine’ relationship manager say something bad about someone even in a private group. You won’t see a ‘genuine’ relationship manager in a public rage, because that’s not what he/ she is. You won’t see a good sales person showing you a finger in a road rage. ‘Genuine’ relationship managers are always on the go, they have amazing energy and every opportunity is a challenge for them. They see a potential in almost everything that the customer throws at them.

And there is a breed of ‘lucky’ sales people, people born with silver or rather a platinum spoon. These are the people who get to get a deal no matter what. They step into the room and the deals turn to them. Not that they are not good at what they do, but they are not as good as the genuine relationship managers. I have come across few of this breed of people and all I can say is that they are lucky!
