Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai

Indians at one point in time have heard of this phase ‘Hindi Chini bhai bhai’. But with the recent activities happening on the Indian-Sino border and the Indian Intelligence talking of Partial Ban on China Telecom Vendors, where is this heading?

The intelligence team is fearing that some of the vendors across the border may infiltrate through remote logins or Trojan horse. Well this is a legitimate worry as was proved by few Chinese hackers in May 2008 when they hacked computers at the Indian Embassy. News site IBN states ‘Indian intelligence sources say the Chinese are hoping to get information and data regarding Indian software being used for battlefield purposes and into designing new weapons and equipment.’

Again from the IBN news ‘CEO Cyberoam, Hemal Patel says, “The problem is that Indian government is buying and installing China-made software on computers that store sensitive information. Earlier, the Chinese had no access to our secrets. Now, we’ve laid it all bare for them. We’ve exposed ourselves. We’re almost asking to be robbed.’

So are the two linked? With the Indian telcos growing at such fast pace they surely need help from cheap manufactures but should that be achieved at the cost of national security?
